Chiarascuro is a term used in Art History to describe the strong contrasts of lightness and darkness seen in a painting. Taken from Toulouse Lautrec’s At the Moulin Rouge at the Art Institute of Chicago, this collection integrates the use of moonstone: a phenomenal gemstone with adularescence that has hints of blue and green. These blue and green hues mirror those seen in the visage of can-can dancer May Milton in the foreground. Her facial brightness is a stark contrast to her dark, high collar dress and the rest of the background of the composition. Toulouse always felt as if he did not fit in with his family, so he took refuge with artists and people he could relate to at the Moulin Rouge. Round and marquise shapes are not usually seen together in designs. Thus, a pairing of these two forms was born inspired by Toulouse’s artistic eccentricity.
